Lesson Procedures and Safety Tips

Learning to swim can be a dramatic experience for any new swimmer. The unknown space, the depth of the water, and the feeling of falling downward. Many parents don’t realize this and unknowingly throw the child in the water, or force a child into learning sooner than they are ready.

This may lead the child to resist learning to swim or keep them from being around water.
Learning to swim is different for every swimmer.

Sunshine Swim School takes this seriously and understands how to read variety of students. Our instructors, at will, gently bring the swimmer outside their comfort zone each lesson, but NOT to initiate fear.
 A gradual progression is most often the most successful.
  • Prior to each lesson the pool and enclosed pool area is to be checked for safety. Potentially dangerous obstacles are to be removed prior to each lesson.
  • Pool owners are to check for correct chlorination and water quality, which must be of a level which the instructor views to be suitable.
  • A First Aid kit will be readily available and in close proximity to the swimming pool.
  • All children are to be instructed on the importance of water safety in and around a pool and adhering to the teacher’s instruction with regard to this.
  • In the case where more than one child is participating in a class and each child receives individual attention the following requirements exist:
  1. Parental supervision in the pool area is required;
  2. Instructors are to keep a regular watch on swimmers waiting their turn;
  3. Swimmers waiting their turn must sit on pool steps or side of the pool and not move off these areas under any circumstances. This is to be made clear by both instructor and parents.
  • Children not complying to these instructions will be required to leave the pool until they are prepared to co-operate with these instructions.
  • No running within the pool area.
  • No Diving will be allowed. Diving into the pool is only to take place in the deep end of the pool under the instructor’s supervision and direct instruction if the water depth is greater than 6ft deep.
  • Only children taking part in a lesson are to be in the swimming pool during the lesson time.
  • When the lesson is complete, all children are required to leave the pool and the pool area and the pool gate is to be closed following each lesson.
  • In the case of a thunderstorm or any electrical activity, lessons are to be immediately suspended.
